The Gross Movie Pool: 2007

Ocean's Thirteen Sails Over Pirates - Week 6

Ocean's Thirteen heisted the #1 spot away from Jack Sparrow with $36.1 million. The was George Clooney's first return to the top of a Summer weekend since Batman & Robin, and we all know how that film turned out. OK, actually, he did have The Perfect Storm between Batman and Oceans, yet that didn't seem to have the same punch. I'm like TNT, I know drama. Unlike The Perfect Storm, aka "Are we going to be smart, or are we going to be men? - Men!"

Report Knocked-Up Doesn't Knock-Out Pirates - Week 5

Sometimes it all comes down to perspectives. Pirates 3 easily beat Knocked-Up in the box-office race for the weekend, however Pirates dropped 62% of it's opening weekend audience (the exact same number Spider-Man 3 dropped) which seems like a downer. On the other side, Knocked-Up made $30.7 million which was already $700,000 ahead of it's $30 million production budget. Big huzzahs for the makers of Knocked-Up while Disney feels like someone bopped their mouse ears.

Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Pirates Life For #3 - Week 4

Only in America could a weekend stand for "campouts" and "go to the movies" at the same time. Well, if that's what the men and women in the armed forces fought for, God bless 'em, since I'm a fan of both.

Shrek Phenomena Not Orge - Week 3

Shrek The Third lived up to its billing as it became the third highest opening of all-time (behind Spider-Man 3 and last year's Pirates of the Caribbean). $121.6 million was not chump change considering how many tickets were purchase at child and matinee prices. Wait a second. Child and matinee prices are like $9 these days, so who are theater owners kidding with these "discounted" prices? It's like Carl's Jr. charging $5.95 for one of their fancy Six-Dollar Burgers. Who's fooling who here?

Second Verse, Same As The First - Week 2

Week 2 of the pool was about as surprising as the new Linkin Park song sounding like every other Linkin Park song.

Not So Itsy Bitsy Spider - Week 1

The Summer Movie Pool opened the way it should with a mega-opening. Just two years ago the pool kicked off with all $19.7 million of Kingdom of Heaven. Boring. Even last year's $47.7 for Mission: Impossible 3 was a little underwhelming, much like the assignments in the film which seemed more like "pretty tough" than "impossible" to pull off. Finally, we get the opening this pool deserves: the biggest in box-office history!
