The Gross Movie Pool: 2010

Salt Doesn't Have The Pepper To Sneeze Past Inception - Week 12

Though I'm sure most viewer were hoping to see Liev Schreiber in various states of undress and in multiple disguises, they had to settle for Angelina Jolie filling that role in the spy thriller Salt. This easily explains why the film didn't open as large as Wanted's $50 million two years ago, but producers were still happy to settle with the very okay $36 million opening as they all exhaled, "Phew, we're no Knight and Day."

Inception Begins As The Sorcerer's Magic Ends - Week 11

After a rough four-years following The Departed, Leonardo DiCaprio's had a fantastic 2010. With the back-to-back hits of Shutter Island and now Inception, we've all forgotten about the Body of Lies that paved his Revolutionary Road to the Blood Diamond. Then again, working with one of the most revered directors of all-time and arguably the most revered director/screenwriter of the 21st century (so far) didn't hurt either.

Despicable Me Preys On Predators - Week 10

Well, how is this going to rub Steve Carrel's ego when his films open better when he's not actually seen in them?

A Total Eclipse Of The Box-Office - Week 9

I've been trying to stay away from 80's references for awhile (I mean, why date myself… I know I'm not going to put out), but this summer has repeatedly put me in that position with endless reboots, remakes, and throwback movies. Hopefully, when Men in Black 3 and Bad Boys 3 come out in the next couple years, I'll be ready with my 90's zingers. Until then, please bear with me and if you leave, don't leave now. Please don't take my heart away.

A Dark Knight For Day; Grown-Ups Avoids Groans - Week 8

There was a time when a Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz film would've been a sure $50 million opening, like what Mr. and Mrs. Smith pulled off in 2005. In fact, it's probably pre-2005 in which Knight and Day should've opened.

The Toys Are Back In Town While Jonah Is Swallowed By A Hex - Week 7

In a summer of up and downs it makes total sense that we finally had a weekend where one film was really, really up and another was really, really down. In other words, one was Lady Gaga's debut album… the other was Paris Hilton's.

Karate Is King Even When It's Kung-Fu - Week 6

In the battle of 80's remakes The Karate Kid crane-kicked The A-Team back to their maximum security stockade. Maybe folks wanted to see "Hang up the jacket" become the new "Wax on," maybe folks weren't ready for a movie where Jessica Biel was fully clothed the entire time, either way, one looked like its ready for a sequel and the other didn't look like it was going to get to a second season.
