The Gross Movie Pool: 2011

Mission Has A Very Possible Gross While Others Are Just Gross - Week 9

It's hard to believe that two years ago three films topped over $60 million each during the Christmas Weekend. In five days Avatar, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, and Sherlock Holmes (which was only out three of those days) made more than $220 million combined. The story was very different in 2010 when the western remake True Grit and a third go-round of Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro in Little Fockers weren't causing folks to bum-rush the box-office. Even if you threw Tron Legacy in there (and please, just throw that thing anywhere… no one will notice), that trio produced a paltry $105 million haul.

The Girl With The Darkest Tintin Bought A War Horse Mission? Impossible - Week 9 Preview

Some have argued you can never have too much of a good thing. I believe the holiday season has proven that wrong time and again. You don't need six new reindeer sweaters, you don't need six loafs of fruitcake, you don't need six new Michael Bolton "Swinging Christmas" albums, and you most certainly don't need six movies released in one five-day period, yet that's exactly what Hollywood has stuffed in our stockings. They realize that even depressed people during this time can only buy one movie ticket before they've passed out from their bottle of Jack Daniels, right?

Sherlock Schlocks, Alvin Undulates, and Mission Holy Craps - Week 8

This was it. This was the weekend showdown people had been staring down for months. Three high-powered sequels were all going to explode all over each other like a Monty Python sketch. It practically felt like a fireworks show with everything but Neil Diamond shouting, "They're coming to America…. TODAY!" Instead, it was more like the time Nancy Reagan replaced The Beach Boys, thinking they weren't American enough, as the 4th of the July band in Washington D.C. with Wayne Newton. Sure, it's not so bad, but it's certainly not so good. Danke Schoen, indeed.

Will Sherlock Outsmart The Chipmunks? - Week 8 Preview

Just two years ago two very different films faced off. One was a big-budget action-adventure movie starring a hot off the Iron Man presses Robert Downey Jr. The other was a sequel to a kids movie that was so lackluster even Jason Lee said, "Yeah, I'll be in that for like three minutes total." Suffice to say, the movie with a 21% Rotten Tomatoes rating out grossed the one with a 70% rating, even with just one "Alllllvinnnnn!" at the beginning and one at the end.

The Muppets Get Their Strings Cut, New Year's Eve Is Over & The Sitter Sat - Weeks 6 & 7

It didn't take long for the euphoric return of The Muppets to turn into the yawn of season... And by long we mean 10 days. Maybe having multiple Christmas-themed Muppet movies and specials already airing for free on TV this month didn't help encourage parents to drop their cash at a theater. I don't think even the '79 classic John Denver and the Muppets Christmas Special got that old this fast.

Could The Muppets Blind Side Breaking Dawn? - Week 6 Preview

With The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 treading the same path as The Twilight Saga: New Moon did in 2009, it feels like it's time to analyze what happened then to see if it could happen again now. So, let's go back to the days of the Balloon Boy hoax, Kanye West stealing Taylor Swift's stage, Jay Leno being on at 10pm, and Tiger Woods having his worst Thanksgiving ever.

Leftover Breaking Dawn Outshines Fresh Turkey Day Options - Week 5

Let's get this straight. When given the choice of roasted turkey, homemade stuffing, and sweet potatoes with marshmallows, audiences chose the two-day old pizza, the half-eaten carne asada burrito, and the bottom-of-the-bucket fried chicken where all of the fat coagulates to the outside skin. Instead of Team Edward and Team Jacob, it seems folks are Team Doggy Bag.
