The Gross Movie Pool: Fall 2007

2007 Holiday Movie Pool Final Report

Well, while the industry is abuzz about Cloverfield having the biggest January opening ever (which is about as big as saying you're the highest rated show on The CW), let's take a look at what that really meant to the end of the 2007 Holiday Movie Season… and more importantly, what that means to the poolers in the pool.

America Loves Leftovers - Week 9

Movie-goers yawned at the Christmas day openings of Aliens vs. Predators: Requiem, The Great Debaters, and The Water Horse. Maybe they were too busy watching the New England Patriots clinch the first 16-0 regular season record on Saturday night which was the most watched regular season football game in 12 years (Shameless Pats plug, I know).

No Secret, National Treasure A Hit - Week 8

In the first film, the secret lied with Charlotte. In the second film, the secret lies in an entire book of secrets. If this makes no sense to you, you've got a pretty good handle on these National Treasure movies. Still, whereas I couldn't turn my brain off enough to enjoy Transformers, the charming hoakiness works for me (and apparently a lot of other people) here.

Legend Is Legenday; Alvin Amazes - Week 7

It's as if all of America collectively said, "Screw you, shopping malls! We're taking care of all that on Amazon and Ebay this year so we have time to go to the movies!" And go to the movies they did as two films combined to gross over $120 million, one of the biggest theater weekends ever.

The Golden Compass Points Due South - Week 6

A year and a half ago The DaVinci Code stormed theaters with its heretical plot and a star-making performance by Tom Hank's hairpiece. 18 months later, another fantastical, heretical film based on a best-selling book moves onto unchallenged screens and the result is… eh.

Awake Stays Asleep… Like The Rest Of The Box-Office - Week 5

Well, does the failure of Awake mean Hollywood was right to avoid the weekend after the Thanksgiving Holiday... Or does it mean people just aren't going to see a movie because it's Friday night.

Enchanted Enchants The Thankgiving Weekend - Week 4

Disney once ruled the Thanksgiving weekend back in the day (that day was the 90's, aka the Hootie and the Blowfish and Gin Blossoms generation). They'd throw out any whole remake like Flubber or live-action version like 101 Dalmatians and it was pure gold.
