America Loves Leftovers - Week 9

I am Legend
National Treasure: The Book of Secrets
Alvin and the Chipmunks
American Gangster
Bee Movie
Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem
The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep
Movie-goers yawned at the Christmas day openings of Aliens vs. Predators: Requiem, The Great Debaters, and The Water Horse. Maybe they were too busy watching the New England Patriots clinch the first 16-0 regular season record on Saturday night which was the most watched regular season football game in 12 years (Shameless Pats plug, I know).

The Scream films have been the only horror franchise to fare well in the Holiday period and that remains the same after AvP's wimpy $10.1 million opening weekend.

The Water Horse was water logged with a $9.2 million opening.

Maybe if Oprah Winfrey's spent as much time on the campaign trail for The Great Debaters (a film she produced) as she's spent for Obama, the pollsters would've had better results. Instead a $6 million debut weekend is what Denzel Washington films usually make in their first afternoon.

X continued to mark the spot for National Treasure 2. Falling a small 20%, the caper absconded with $35.7 million and a bejeweled $124 million so far.

I can't even write "amazingly" in bold enough letters to translate Alvin and the Chipmunks gaining 3% in its third weekend and totaling a fur-ball inducing $141.4 million in three weeks.

Will Smith neared his third $200 million grosser (and his first to headline since the other two were Independence Day and Men In Black (Yes, Mr. Jones was top-billed)) as I Am Legend sits with $194.5 million and is still clearing $27.5 million in its third weekend. It may have taken a long time to get this movie made, but obviously there's a reason people kept bringing it off the dust heap. They knew it could make bank if done right.

The Top Five If Today Was Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Observance:

#1. I Am Legend - $194.5 million
#2. Alvin & The Chipmunks - $141.4 million
#3. American Gangster - $129 million
#4. Bee Movie - $124.2 million
#5. National Treasure: Book of Secrets - $124.1 million

This Week
All the cards are on the table and now it's just a matter of how they all shake out. It looks like Bee Movie and American Gangster will fall to the 4 and 5 with Legend, Alvin, and NT2 battling it out for the 1, 2, and 3 spots.

Can Enchanted enchant enough to crack the top 5? How about a resurgent Charlie Wilson's War? Can Alvin hold off Treasure? Can Treasure trump Legend?

No one should be feeling confident at this point, yet the good news is that a lot of poolers have a puncher's chance right for all the marbles. Sadly, I won't be one of them…
