While we pretend the summer weekend that only meekly offered Uncle Drew and Sicario 2 never happened, July tried to lay the thunder as June had done. Oh wait, June started off with Adrift and the “meh” Ocean’s 8. Raise your MoviePass if you saw history repeating itself coming.

The First Purge was about but not more so purgy than any other purge with a $31 million five-day opening. I’m pretty sure I remember Dr. Ruth saying first purges aren’t always the best, but like most things I stumbled onto when I was a kid, I had no idea what she was talking about. The First Purge looks to finish a little short of the other purges with a $60 million total. Hmm, “a little short” sounds like something else I heard on Dr. Ruth.

Ant-Man & The Wasp was the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to feature a heroine in the title. (The MCU disclaimer is necessary since 2005 had Jennifer Garner’s Electra as Sony’s (forgotten) Daredevil spin-off) The “Girl Power” helped a bit as AM&TW opened with $78.6 million, almost $20 million more than Ant-Man alone did in 2015. Still, it’s also the lowest opening MCU film since, yes, the last Ant-Man film. I guess not everyone’s a Paul Rudd guy. There must be a bigger contingent of people than I thought that really wanted Phoebe on Friends to end up with Hank Azaria instead of Rudd.

The biggest news about the small insects was a 60% drop in their second week. That’s a roach motel you don’t get out of. Ant-Man & The Wasp may be heading to a $180 million total or so, no longer looking likely to catch that dangling fruit of Solo to make the Top Five.

Skyscraper may be the reminder some people needed that even The Rock isn’t impervious to a bad match-up. Sometimes you’re wrestling Stone Cold Steve Austin. Other nights, it’s the Honky Tonk Man. Skyscraper scraped together a $24.9 million debut making it the second lowest debut for a Dwayne Johnson film since 2013. Of course, his lowest since 2013 was just last year’s Baywatch belly flop at $18.5 million. Still, at least he wasn’t out-acted by the film’s special effects team this time as his prosthetic leg came off a little wooden. There’s no question the white ape George was the best actor in Rampage.

In the Gomer Pyle “Surprise, Surprise, Surprise” category comes something we should’ve seen coming 1.6 kilometers away. Hotel Transylvania: Summer Vacation cleaned-up on the kiddie market to check-in a $44.1 million debut and show The Rock who really had some teeth. Call it the Ice Age theory that parents have to take their kids to something if you want to, yet it’s in the same ballpark opening as the other Hotel Transylvania openings. This flexes the franchise’s “We can open whenever we want to” muscle. Meaning, you can bank on a Hotel Transylvania: Holiday Vacation in 2020. The only thing that could stop them is if Jack Skellington came and locked them away in Halloween Town to stay!

The Top Five If Today Was Labor Day:

#2. The Incredibles 2 - $535.8 million
#3. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - $364 million
#3. Deadpool 2 - $316.2 million
#4. Solo: A Star Wars Story - $211.9 million
