Awake Stays Asleep… Like The Rest Of The Box-Office - Week 5

American Gangster
Bee Movie
Fred Claus
The Mist
Well, does the failure of Awake mean Hollywood was right to avoid the weekend after the Thanksgiving Holiday... Or does it mean people just aren't going to see a movie because it's Friday night.

The Jessica Alba/Hayden Christensen movie debuted with a very poor $5.8 million. Needless to say, the films Hayden has starred in that haven't been called Episode II and Episode III have not exactly left an impression. Of course, I still wish I could forget the impression Episode II and Episode III left on me.

Enchanted dropped 52% in its second weekend. However, that was enough to best Beowulf's total gross so far. For those keeping score at home, the animated movie that becomes a live action movie is beating the live action movie that was made into an animated movie. Yeah, that sentence doesn't make any sense to me either. I never claimed to be someone who kept score.

Pretty much every other film dropped about 50% as well. This Christmas, Hitman, Fred Clause, The Mist, and American Gangster. Stiffer drops of around 60% occurred for Bee Movie and Mr. Magorium's Super Long Namium. Apparently families had other things they could do together like watch the Spice Girls on the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

The Top Five If Today Was Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Observance:

#1. American Gangster - $121.7 million
#2. Bee Movie - $117.6 million
#3. Enchanted - $70 million
#4. Beowulf - $68.9 million
#5. Fred Claus - $59.8 million

This Week
It's weird. A year ago you'd have thought Daniel Craig was using Nicole Kidman to make a bigger name for himself. After the success of Casino Royale, it seems that his Nicole Kidman pairings are bringing him down. The Invasion was a disaster all the way around in August. Now they're paired again in a big, fantasy, special effects epic that doesn't seem to be quite aimed at anyone in The Golden Compass. Is it too scary for kids? Is it too kiddy for grown-ups? Will it even matter because there's absolutely no other film coming out this week that even sparks any interest amongst movie goers? Argh, this is like the worst season ever!!!
