Beowulf Doesn't Stand Out From The Pack - Week 3

American Gangster
Bee Movie
Beowulf
Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium
Lions for Lambs
The good news is that Beowulf showed there's an audience for adult geared animation. The bad news, that audience didn't quiet justify the $150 million dollars it cost to make the film.

Beowulf opened with $27.5 million which is more than The Polar Express debuted with three years ago. However, that film played through the whole holiday season and ended up with almost $163 million. That's one tally even an 800 year-old tale will have trouble tackling.

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium was the KB Toys of kids movies. A mere $9.6 million opening wouldn't even get you a Wii on Ebay this Christmas time. This Night At The Toy Shop didn't have any of the magic needed to make an impression this holiday season.

Fred Claus dug in the claws slipping only 36% in it's second weekend. Though it probably won't help the film make a dent in the final top five, at least it avoided the 57% freefall that befell Lions for Lambs. Talk about what happens when you make a film that no one wants to seeā€¦ Guess what, no one wants to see it! Hopefully Hollywood will get the message that if they want to make a movie about Iraq, it better include Michael Moore or Will Smith and some aliens or maybe all three. That's the only way it'll work.

Bee Movie and American Gangster both fell about 45% and continued their normal trajectories of ending up with around $130 million.

The Top Five If Today Was Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Observance:

#1. American Gangster - $100.7 million
#2. Bee Movie - $93.6 million
#3. Fred Clause - $35.7 million
#4. Beowulf - $27.5 million
#5. Lions for Lambs - $11.6 million
