Chicken Little Not So Big - Week 1

Chicken Little
Jarhead
The answer to the age-old question, "Which came first, the Chicken Little or the egg?" lies somewhere in the middle.

Making $40 million in your first weekend is certainly not laying an egg, but opening almost $30 million less than the last two Pixar films (Finding Nemo and The Incredibles both opened at $70 mill plus) doesn't exactly make you feel warm and fuzzy.

That said, the opening is just a little less than Madagascar's $47.6 million in the summer and that flick went on to gross over $190 mill. That should still make it a player in the Top Five, maybe just not the big bird.

Jarhead sure proved to be strong in the field. Opening with $27.7 million, that's a big chunk of change for a non-star, non-trivial movie about Gulf War I. When you top the opening figures of Pauly Shore's In The Army Now, you're talking big business.

The Top Five flicks if today was Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Observance…

This Week
Gee, there hasn't been a weekend this exciting at the box-office in weeks... Oh wait, everything (besides last week) since the summer has been a weekend of, "Huh, am I really supposed to pay $10 to see that?"

Get Rich or Die Tryin' is trying to be 8 Mile 2. Granted, 9 Mile would be a better title for the follow-up, but less people would get the reference. It's like when they made Jewel of the Nile as the sequel to Romancing the Stone. The flick would've done a lot better as Romancing Another Stone and minus the Billy Ocean song.

Derailed seems like some sorta Meg Ryan and Dennis Quiad movie made back before they were Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid. Remember when DOA opened DOA? Exactly.

Even if Zathura is Jumanji 2, I think most people would rather play Pictionary, right? Sure, I'm more partial to Taboo (the whole buzzer thing just rocks. It's like taking the "coo coo" sound from the $25,000 Pyramid when you said an ineligible clue and having it in your own backyard). Regardless, Zathura needs to make a splash this weekend or it will literally be game over by the time Harry Potter opens next weekend.
