‘Detective Pikachu’ Peeka Peeka’s at #2 - Week 3

 Long Shot
Avengers: Endgame
Detective Pikachu
Poms
The Hustle
Uglydolls
After last week’s middling offerings, audiences were “game” for something different. It doesn’t get much more different than a cuddly, yellow, fluffy, wise-crackin’, caffeine-addicted, pokemon with Ryan Reynolds voice. Well, minus the yellow, that might describe Seth Rogen in Long Shot too.

Detective Pikachu caught ‘em all when it came to Mother’s Day money with a $54.4 million debut. That’s a lot of nice moms who took their kids to this film… or nice dads who let mom go get her mimosa while they hit the theater. Me and my boys took their mom to Speed Racer once on Mother’s Day. She definitely earned her pinot grigio after that one!

What could’ve been a high-concept flop on the levels of, well, Speed Racer, Detective Pikachu played right into fans hands and delivered an entertaining movie to boot. It’s amazing how much more successful Ryan Reynolds’ movies are when you can’t see his face. Why is that when’s he’s just so gosh darn pretty? Must be the Canadian thing.

The Hustle was able to swindle $13 million in its opening. Pretty impressive considering that number was just three points lower than it’s 16% Rotten Tomatoes rating. I’m trying to think if they could’ve gone with some other actress pairing would things have been different. Cate Blanchett as the Michael Caine role and Awkwafina as the wild & crazy gal seems like it could’ve worked. Maybe, at the end of the day, they just needed to make their own movie with their own jokes. Even if “May I go to the bathroom… [pause]… thank you” never gets old.

Poms didn’t even make it to the halftime show with a dismal $5.4 million opening. Two straight weeks of ads during the Today show for that?! I’d say send this film out to the retirement home but it already started there.

Still, all of this was secondary to Avengers: Endgame ending-up with another $63.3 million weekend. Having already gathered the six infinity stones on-top of $723.7 million at the box-office, here’s one thing Thanos can’t snap away.

This week… A John Wick movie comes out the same weekend a dog dies several times in A Dog’s Purpose?! I would not want to be hitmen hunting him down in that film! Hitmen, hitwomen, hit people? Do we have an accepted gender neutral option on this occupation yet? So last century… Meanwhile, The Sun is Also a Star also comes out. As a teen romance movie based on a book, I know it has no chance for our Top Five pool purposes and I’m sure I’ll never see it, but after seeing the trailer a couple times in theaters, I just want to know if everything’s going to turn out ok! It’s like watching a tear-inducing Hallmark commercial and not catching the ending because someone changed the channel. I just want everyone to be happy!

The Top Five If Today Was Labor Day:
#1. Avengers: Endgame - $723.7 million
#2. Detective Pikachu - $54.4. million
#3. The Intruder - $21.6 million
#4. Long Shot - $19.9 million
#5. Uglydolls - $14.5 million
