The onslaught of films at the end of May has brought one contender, a couple pretenders, some nice alternatives if cgi battles aren’t your thing, and, most importantly, helped us forget films like Uglydolls even came out. Now if only Spotify would recognize that liking Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” does not mean I want songs from the Uglydolls soundtrack. It’s like when Thumbs-Upping ABBA music gets you Mamma Mia Movie versions with Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep singing. Not the same thing!

The big story for the last few weeks has been the remarkable, come from behind (or is it come from ahead) story of Aladdin kicking butt. Iffy reviews and groan inducing trailers didn’t stop people from dreaming of jeanie as Aladdin was granted it’s first wish of a $116.8 million four-day opening. In the mere rubbing of a lamp, Aladdin doubled the debuts of Detective Pikachu, John Wick 3, and Godzilla 2, showing everyone who was really the King Ali.

Aladdin even held on well with its second weekend, dropping only 52% despite three new films being release. In only ten-days, the film has topped $185 million and it’s a whole new world for any pooler who had this film on their list. For those who didn’t, myself included, time may tell that we are not diamonds in the rough.

John Wick - Chapter 3: Parabellum and Godzilla: King of the Monsters showed that there is still a middle tier for films this summer. A tier Detective Pikachu has firmly established with it’s $130.9 million gross so far. John Wick 3 started with $56.8 million and now sits comfortable (or as comfortable as you can sit after killing 17,000 people in two hours) with $125.7 million. Godzilla 2 (or 27 if you count all the other previous versions) was downsized a bit with a $47.8 million roar, yet should continue to shatter theater screen speakers for another couple weeks before quietly going back under the water.

The results show that none of these three films have a chance of being a Top Five contender. However, money has been made, sequels have been ordered, popcorn has been sold, and theaters have been filled seeing countless trailers for other films still to be released. Films that may get these movie-lovers back to see another film, even if some of those trailers featured Batista. That’s how this whole business works and so far this summer it’s been working fine.

As for a few “other” movies, Brightburn burned-out fast while Ma might make its way to $50 million once its finished its run. Rocketman blasted off with $25.7 million, far short of Bohemian Rhapsody’s $51 million start. Still, as something different, Rocketman might hang on long enough for something in the $75-$100 million range. Lastly, Avengers: Endgame is slowing down it’s game and is still $120 million behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens domestically. The Avengers make take over the world title, but the U.S. is still one with the force.

This week… It’s a super showdown between The Secret Life of Pets 2 and Dark Phoenix (which is pretty much any part of Phoenix outside the Camelback area… Seriously, I’m used to security guards in 7-11’s after dark, but at 2 p.m.?! Eleanor Shellstrop from The Good Place never had a chance). Pets 2 has a chance to create an even bigger franchise for Universal than Despicable Me. Dark Phoenix has a chance to be the lowest grossing X-Men film ever. So much at stake, so much at stake.

The Top Five If Today Was Labor Day:
#1. Avengers: Endgame - $815.7 million
#2. Aladdin - $185.5 million
#3. Detective Pikachu - $130.9 million
#4. John Wick - Chapter 3: Parabellum - $125.7 million
#5. Godzilla: King of the Monsters - $47.8 million
