Mel's Mini-Win Over Mini-Movies - Week 6

Happy Feet
Casino Royale
Borat
The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause
Flushed Away
The Holiday
Apocalypto
Mel Gibson's Apocolypto did as well as anyone could've expected with its subtitles and decapitations with $15 million in it's opening weekend. What might be even more surprising is how the other new movies didn't do any better.

The Holiday was more like an overnight stay with $12.8 million. If it's still playing by the time we actually get to a holiday, then they'll have something to talk about.

Blood Diamond actually turned out to be this year's Proof of Life after opening with $8.9 million. Jennifer Connolly as Meg Ryan, Leo as Russell Crowe, and jungle scenes and guns as jungle scenes and guns. Well done, everyone. Good job all around. Audiences love remakes of films no one remembered in the first place.

Unaccompanied Minors was not the yuletide version of The Breakfast Club. It was more like the yuletide version of Baby Geniuses after a $5.8 million debut.

Everything else pretty much slipped the normal the 40% as to be expected. The only thing I expected was not to be enticed to see much this holiday season and that's turned out as exactly as planned.

The Top Five if Today was MLK Day…

#1. Happy Feet - $137.9 million
#2. Casino Royale - $129 million
#3. Borat - $122.8 million
#4. Santa Clause 3 - $79.9 million
#5. Flushed Away - $61.6 million
